Short+Sweet Sydney 2016 SEASON LAUNCH

Short+Sweet launches multiple Sydney festivals in style!

The biggest little performance festival in the world, Short+Sweet, has launched its 2016 season with a typically entertaining party – and the fun & games have barely begun!

On Saturday night, the Depot Theatre in Marrickville hosted a gathering of actors, writers, directors, singers, comedians and magicians as the hit international franchise announced details of the festivals planned for Sydney from this January.

Short+Sweet Theatre (now performed around Australia and internationally) will open its 15th Sydney season from January 6 at the Depot; meanwhile at the New Theatre in Newtown, Short+Sweet Cabaret returns with a parallel festival, this year including comedy and magic as well!

Comedian Eli Gallagher (right) and young actress/director (and already festival regular) Debbie Neilson hosted the event; the large audience ate and drank and not only heard from festival directors Alana Teasdale (Theatre), James Taylor (Cabaret) and Ben Oxley (Voices – the a cappella singing festival returning even bigger in April) – but were treated to great performances too.

Gallagher gave a hilarious short, stand-up routine; Coral Mercer-Jones (below left) thrilled with a brilliant cabaret party-piece; and Oxley was joined by his son Joshua in a stirring rendition of “You’ll Never Walk Alone” from Carousel. Taylor even presented a (literally) cheeky burlesque act in a life-size martini glass!

Smartfone Flick Fest (SF3) founders Ali Crew and Angela Blake told how Short+Sweet had introduced them to each other and inspired their own successful festival. Long-time former Short+Sweet festival director (now assisting with the comedy fest) Pete Malicki also spoke warmly of the opportunities presented by Short+Sweet in all its forms.

Teasdale highlighted some features of the 2016 theatre festival: the involvement of Matthew Popp (star of Australian Oz-Zom-Com “Me & My Mates vs The Zombie Apocalypse”); the 3rd instalment of the brilliant “A Day Out with the Mates” series; and the return of stage and screen veteran Tom Richards and multiple 2015 winner Tom Green with his new play “The Revenge of Mr Meowgi”.

More than 90 NSW writers feature in the festival along with many more from interstate and overseas. As always, Short+Sweet will also offer free masterclasses to participants.

“Short+Sweet is more than a festival; it’s a community and a network, brimming with creative potential,” Teasdale enthused. “It’s also an opportunity for creative artists to share their work with others, across the nation… even across the globe.”

Short+Sweet Theatre opens at the Depot Theatre on 6 January and runs Wed-Sun through February with both a Top 80 and Wildcards (weekend matinees) program. The finals take place in March. Short+Sweet Cabaret also opens 6 January at the New Theatre and runs Wed-Saturday until 30 Jan.
