Short+Sweet presents short form festivals in multiple locations across Australia and internationally. Established in 2002 with ten-minute plays in Sydney, the accessible ten-minute format struck a chord with audiences and participants alike.
Current activities in Australia include annual programs in Sydney, Melbourne, Canberra, throughout Queensland, and a range of regional venues. In addition the international Short+Sweet network includes events across New Zealand, Philippines Malaysia, India, and the United Arab Emirates.
Since its inception the organisation has grown rapidly and now offers programs in theatre, dance, musical theatre, and cabaret annually at many international locations. It also uses the popular ten-minute format to explore unique performance mediums, including Bollywood, stand-up comedy, choral performance; and community sectors including corporate, secondary school, and regional touring.
Short+Sweet is a powerful arts development model and encourages the creation of new works while providing a platform for emerging artists. Along the way Short+Sweet develops participants, audiences and the art-form in an open and collaborative way. Encouraging collaboration between all participating artists it has grown into a showcase of local talent, a vast networking opportunity, and a means for artists to explore their creative medium in a safe and supported environment, rewarded with professional development, awards, and international performance opportunities.
The 2016 Short+Sweet Theatre Festival in Sydney (Jan-Mar) will mark the 15th Anniversary of the event, which has for many years been the biggest short play festival in the world. Short+Sweet continues to make the world a more creative place – ten minutes at a time!
